The names listed on the war memorial are in four panels around the base
of the column for 1914-1918, on two panels at the back wall for 1939-1945
and a marble plaque commemorating one local man who died in the Korean
Campaign.
The statue aloft the central column is known as SPIRIT OF FREEDOM - a woman holding aloft broken chains. It is one of a very few number of War Memorials in the World with a female figure. The sculptor was Courtnay Pollock and the statue caused a great deal of controversy over its suitability.
